The Project
Under Armour’s new Global Headquarters was designed to be a bold architectural statement and a highly visible landmark along Interstate 95 in Baltimore. As part of the campus development, Under Armour sought a large-scale illuminated sign that would deliver strong daytime contrast, exceptional nighttime visibility, and long-term durability—all while being installed during active construction of the facility.
The scale and complexity of the sign required precise engineering, extensive coordination, and careful execution.
Client
UNDER ARMOUR
Scope/Key Project Objectives
- Design, fabricate, and install a large-scale illuminated Under Armour logo and channel letter sign to serve as a landmark feature for the new global headquarters campus.
- Engineer and fabricate all custom support steel to securely mount the signage to the building structure.
- Achieve a distinctive visual effect with solid black daytime appearance and bright white nighttime illumination using printed vinyl flex faces.
- Coordinate with a professional engineer to develop shop drawings, structural analysis, and calculations to meet all applicable building codes
- Execute installation within an active construction environment, coordinating closely with other trades and site teams.
- Perform in-field assembly, vinyl face stretching, crane-assisted installation, and all secondary electrical wiring and power connections.
Our Solution
- Developed a fully coordinated delivery plan that aligned engineering, fabrication, logistics, and field operations into a single, controlled workflow.
- Sequenced fabrication and installation to support a just-in-time deployment strategy, minimizing on-site staging and interference with ongoing construction.
- Maintained proactive communication with site leadership and other trades to safely navigate a crowded construction environment and maintain schedule confidence.
- Utilized modular construction methods to break the sign into transportable sections while preserving visual continuity once assembled.
- Implemented a multi-tier LED layout to ensure uniform illumination, controlled brightness, and long-term serviceability across all elements.
- Executed complex crane operations and heavy-equipment lifts with detailed lift planning and real-time field coordination.
Timeline
From award to completion, the project spanned 15 months, including engineering, submittals, fabrication, logistics, and installation. The signage was successfully completed in October 2024, ahead of the opening of Under Armour’s new Global Headquarters.
Project Highlights
- In its entirety, the signage system totaled 6,203 sq. ft. including the 37 ft. tall illuminated UA logo and 16 ft. tall illuminated UNDER ARMOUR channel letter set.
- 211 power supplies were used with a total power consumption of 14,993.34 watts were used to illuminate the sign.
- 1,920 shop fabrication hours (excluding steel fabrication) were put in to construct this sign package.
The Result
Our team completed on-site assembly and final detailing with precision to ensure clean sightlines, tight tolerances, and a refined finished appearance and delivered a fully commissioned signage system ready for activation ahead of the Global Headquarters opening.
- Monumental, structurally sound signage with lasting visibility from Interstate 95
- Energy-efficient LED illumination with built-in redundancy for consistent day and night impact
- Modular construction allowing safe installation and easy future maintenance
- A bold, iconic presence that reinforces Under Armour’s brand identity
